Nigeria – The Un-modernized Markets

I am in Nigeria for the month of December. Each day I  experience something new.  The other day I visited the market which got me thinking about modernization and whether or not it is always a good thing. One good outcome of the lack of complete modernization in Nigeria is the fact that organic produce and meat are prevalent at markets. The markets are planted all over the city on every corner, on the side of the highway, in front of homes. Unlike the U.S. major food companies do not dominate the food supply of produce.

There is no bureaucracy, no politics when it comes to the markets, anyone can set it up. The other day I picked up some bananas, watermelon, and potatoes.

Imagine if there were farmers markets all over the town of the US. Fresh produce, organic meats, food that was grown a few miles away from your house instead of hundreds of miles away, spray painted with pesticides. Wow that would be great.

Yes,  I am aware that farmers markets do exist in the US. I have one in my town. But there is only one and it is not abundant in produce and meats; it is limited. Furthermore it is only open once a week. I’m sure many cities in US are like this. Id like to see many farmers markets panted all over the city.
